I have spent twenty-three years in the semiconductor industry, from fabrication floors in Hsinchu to boardrooms in Santa Clara. I have watched entire product categories get hyped into existence and then quietly die. I have seen technologies that everyone dismissed become the backbone of trillion-dollar industries. The pattern is always the same: the things that actually matter tend to be boring, expensive, and infrastructural. The things that don't matter tend to be exciting, photogenic, and consumer-facing.
So here is my contrarian scorecard for 2026 — five trends that will genuinely reshape the technology landscape this year, and five that will continue to consume enormous amounts of attention while delivering very little.

1. The AI Infrastructure Spending Explosion
Forget the chatbot wars. The real story of 2026 is the unprecedented capital deployment into AI infrastructure. This is not speculative venture money chasing the next consumer app. This is balance-sheet capital from the largest companies on Earth being poured into concrete, copper, and silicon.
Alphabet raised $20 billion in bonds specifically to fund data center expansion. Microsoft, Amazon, and Google have collectively committed over $67 billion to data center buildouts in India alone — a single country. Meta is spending $65 billion on AI infrastructure this year. Why does this matter more than the models themselves? Because infrastructure determines what is possible. OpenAI's reported $5 billion loss in 2024 looks even more precarious when your $200/month API customers can switch to a self-hosted alternative for pennies.
The semiconductor implications are significant. Open-source model proliferation drives demand across a broader range of hardware — not just the H100/B200 tier, but mid-range inference accelerators, edge AI chips, and the entire ecosystem of hardware optimized for smaller, efficient models. This democratization of AI compute is the single most important structural shift in the industry since the cloud displaced on-premise servers.
3. AI Agents Moving from Demo to Production
We have been hearing about AI agents for two years. In 2024, they were demos. In 2025, they were pilots. In 2026, they are going into production at scale.
The inflection point is real this time, driven by three converging developments. First, the tooling has matured. The AGI debate is theological, not operational. Let the philosophers sort it out. Engineers have work to do.
7. 6G Hype

The technology works. Smart contracts execute. Blockchains are immutable. The problem is that the vast majority of real-world applications do not need immutability, decentralization, or trustlessness. They need speed, usability, and customer support. Until Web3 advocates can articulate a compelling answer to "why does this need to be on a blockchain?" for mainstream use cases, the technology will remain a solution looking for a problem.
10. Quantum Computing Breakthroughs
IBM, Google, and a handful of well-funded startups continue to make genuine progress in quantum computing. Error rates are declining. Qubit counts are increasing. The research is real and the science is sound.
But the gap between "research breakthrough" and "commercially useful quantum computer" remains measured in decades, not years. The problems that quantum computers can solve faster than classical computers — certain optimization problems, specific cryptographic tasks, particular molecular simulations — are narrow. The engineering challenges of maintaining quantum coherence at scale are formidable. And the software ecosystem barely exists.
I say this as someone who has spent years working on the semiconductor physics that underpin qubit fabrication: quantum computing is important long-term research. It is not a 2026 technology trend. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
The Through-Line
Look at the five trends that matter. They share a common thread: they are all about infrastructure, deployment, and economic fundamentals. AI spending is infrastructure. Open-source models are economics. Agent deployments are enterprise adoption. Physical AI is manufacturing reality. Sovereign AI is geopolitics.
Now look at the five that don't matter. They share a different thread: they are all about narrative, promise, and speculation. AGI is a philosophical debate. 6G is a marketing campaign. The metaverse is a consumer hardware bet that isn't landing. Web3 is an ideology. Quantum is a research program.
The technology industry has always been better at generating excitement than at doing the unglamorous work of deployment, scaling, and cost reduction. The trends that actually reshape industries are the ones that solve real problems for real customers at a price they can afford. Everything else is noise.
I will revisit this list in December. I expect to be right on at least eight out of ten. The infrastructure bets are already locked in — you cannot un-pour $200 billion in concrete. The hype bets are already fading — you cannot sell a product that nobody wants to wear on their face.
